Hi Matt,

Since Proview is SSAB's production control system, they must have selected a preferred, "trial by fire" I/O vendor a long time ago? Although, I/O selection is likely a function of project time frame, location and availability? For example, SSAB has a quenching facility located in Mobile, AL. It would be interesting to know what I/O is used there versus the big facility in Sweden.

BTW, Proview source code is full of interesting documentation that might be helpful. For example, in the latest 5.5 source code folder:

../pwrsrc_5.5.0-1/othermanu/doc/orm/src

There are many pictures and configuration examples on connecting Powerlink I/O from the following vendor:

www.br-automation.com/en/products/io-systems/

In my mind, it would be much easier to buy SSAB-vetted, European I/O while working on new protocol support to interface to more familiar US products?

Regards,
Ron

Tim and Ron,
Thanks for the response! I am aware of the OPC UA momentum, but haven't seen many practical implementations in direct controls.
If understand correctly, OPC UA isn't yet built into Proview, and will be a while before anyone (us, you guys, Claes) implements it.
I am currently trying to get students funded to do this sort of development, but we haven't had any takers yet.

Even so, I can see from Ron and your positions that OPC UA has enthusiastic support.
I'll add OPC UA to the long list of IO Protocols we'd like to see supported.

Ron,
Currently we are looking all over the world for our hardware, and certainly Europe.
To that end, we stumbled on this interesting little piece of kit:
Revolution Pi Industrial Hardware

Some points
1. Raspberry pi seems an ideal, long term hardware platform for remote IO. Standardized, open hardware and software. Honestly there is alot to like.
2. Software options, and lots of them. Run what you like.
3. RevPi Gate POWERLINK Slave AKA Powerlink support! We will be testing this in the near future.

I think I'd like to start a list of Raspberry pi hardware that might be OTS useful for industrial IO (and works with Proview).
Any interest?

I look forward to seeing the results of your project, too!

Thanks,
Matt

Seriously.
I've only done a few simple things with it so far; but I have to say, I like it, so far.
I'll put together a post on how well it works.
Probably Modbus-TCP first, and then Powerlink (we did get the module).

Matt,

One of our younger engineers just bought a starter I/O kit from Opto-22 and a couple of RPI_3s for a Proview test bed. He used Opto-22 I/O on a previous industrial project.

www.opto22.com/products/opto-p1-starterkit-1

My question, "How are you going to interface this to Proview?"

His response:

What the heck is node red?

nodered.org/

I just installed node-red on a Linux laptop and ran through a few tutorials. Definitely worth checking out. Platform independent. The future of IOT is unfolding, quickly.

Hundreds of open-source libraries are already available.

Suddenly, the foundation of Pi Revolution becomes clear. And, maybe, Exxon's open controls platform initiative just became mute?

Ron,
Sorry for the delay.

WOW!
I agree with you, products like this may out-mode just about any high level "adoption" program. It would be nice to see something like the Exxon project/other regulatory group buy into this kind of stuff directly.

Time will tell...

Additionally, would you open a thread and talk about your experience with your opto22 gear?

Thanks for this!
