I am new to PLC programing and SCADA, and am slowly reading the Proview manuals. But I am probably lacking some of the basic knowledge required to fully understand what I am reading.
Does anyone have any recommended books to get introduced to PLC programing and SCADA that is relevant for Proview.

Regards
Trygve

Hi TrygveHe,
Proview is a process control environment design for Linux operating system.
So first you have to be familiar to Linux OS (Ubuntu, Mint or Debian) to correctly install and use Proview.
Proview is a very powerfull system but the learning curve is hard.
In my opinion, Proview isn't suitable for PLC programming's beginner.
You can find in the 'documentation' page some video tutorials (sorry most in french) whitch can help you to learn the basic features of Proview.
Note that to program a PLC (with Proview) you have to know the following concepts:
> boolean algebra,
> logic functions (OR, AND, NOT, LATCH,...),
> symbolic and grafcet languages,
> control (PID),
> object-oriented language,
> DCS architecture (operator and process station, HMI).

If you don't have a basic programming knowledges, maybe you can use some tutorials that you can find in web (youtube)?

Best regards.
/Ben

Hi and thanks for the reply.

I do have some basic programming knowledge and experience, although on a hobby basis. I have been programming quite a bit in C and C++. Mostly for the Arduino in the last few years.

I am also a process engineer and have actually designed and built a control system for a test unit 10-15 years ago. Then i used software and hardware from National Instruments.

In my presennt work i use and initiate modifications to the control system for an offshore oil instllation. But I am not involvedin any programming of thiss system.

My plan with ProView is to control a small micro brewery, controlling approximately 12 valves, to pumps, a couple of heaters and some flow and level switches. I am confident that I will manage this, although I notice that the learing curve is steep for Proview.

Regards,
Trygve

Hi Trygve,

Search on the forum for user named: "brew".
He has a brewery running.....
As far as I know mainly with Proview/Arduinos.

Edit: Be sure you search the forum with search option: Any Date (default is : 1 year)

Good luck,

Hi TrygveHe,
So you are not a beginner ;)
I think you can use my tutorials (see 'Documentation', Ben's videos).
In this videos I speak French but the graphics and texts are in English so I suppose you can follow this without difficulties.

What do you plan to use for I/O system?
In my opinion Modbus devices are more easy to program vs Arduino.
But a lot of people use Arduino with Proview.

For your project, with this process design (sensors, actuators) you can use 1 computer for all functions: development, operator and process station.
If you want to historize a variables you can also install MySql in this computer.
Proview do not require a high performance computer for few inputs/outputs. You can use a standard desktop or workstation (e.g. CoreDuo, 4Go ram).
For a basic control project (like a micro brewery), Proview provide all functions you need: grafcet programming, PID controlers, graphic symbols for HMI.

Good learning!

Hi TrygveHe,

You can also use Raspberry PI with Proview as well, works fine, but take care of SD card quality
