TOPIC: Opstation on the other side of a fiber tap

Opstation on the other side of a fiber tap 6 years 3 months ago #9417

Has anyone ever tried to use an operator's station on the read-only side of a fiber-tap?
I'm guessing no, but I can see this being incredibly useful.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,

I don't think that is possible as the Proview network design is based on two way communication with requests and replies.

Claes,

Thanks. I figured that this would be difficult, but I was hoping I wouldn't be the first one to try it with Proview.

Even so, I'm going to attempt one-way database replication and then try to get the historian to look at the replicated database.

The historian will see the sql service as whole, but the database itself will be replicated with no responses. Then the Operator's station can be used to look at the historical data. If the data seems bad, it'll need to be checked against the "safe-side" system.

Do you think this has a chance to work with an unmodified Proview system?
Obviously no control will happen from this, but it would allow for unsecured folks to look at the data while data is created (or shortly there-after).

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,

You will problably be able to use sev_xtt on the cloned storage server to look at the history curves. An operator station will try to get info about the SevHist objects which will not be mounted, so I don't think this will work. If you though load the root volume of a process station into the operator station, you should be able to open the history for objects in this volume.

Claes,
Is this what you were thinking, more generally?

*IF* this can be made to work, then it would be a good solution for me.
This is also a process I would be able to share with others.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,

Just my thoughts....

It looks like security is a big issue here.
But... If you are already in a protected LAN have you considered port mirrors (SPAN) by using for example openvswhitch ?

Another possibility is maybe the beta version of redundancy in Porview v.5.5.
I haven't tried it yet but it should be possible to have 2 identical nodes (one active, the other passive)
When you can secure the state of the passive node (to stay always passive) then you have maybe reached (a part) of your goal......
